Hilary Duff Metamorphosis

It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 with 203,000 copies and hit #1 in its second week. Hilary was fifteen, and The Lizzie McGuire Movie had opened that May.

So Yesterday made her the first artist in four months to top Billboard's singles sales chart without an American Idol tie. Come Clean ended up as the Laguna Beach theme.

The edition to own

The Latin American edition, with Girl Can Rock as a bonus track, same as the Target one. In Asia and Australia the bonus was A Day in the Sun, and Japan got both.

Come Clean

A Dave Meyers video, with the storm that knocks out the power in the house. Nominated for Best Pop Video at the 2004 VMAs and used in the trailer for A Cinderella Story.

So Yesterday

Lead single, July 2003. The video premiered on MTV, and two days later it got its own episode of Making the Video.

Sweet Sixteen

The album came out August 26, 2003, a month before Hilary turned sixteen, with a song named exactly that.

Little Voice

It's a cover of Swedish singer Sahlene's 2000 song, with new lyrics by Kara DioGuardi and Patrik Berger. It was only released as a single outside the US. And yes, that's where our newsletter gets its name.

Come Clean (Mine)

In April 2026 she re-recorded it for the Laguna Beach reunion. It came out on silver Record Store Day vinyl, 10,000 copies.

The team behind it

The Matrix, Charlie Midnight, John Shanks and Kara DioGuardi, among others. Why Not came from The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

On the 2026 tour

So Yesterday, Come Clean, Why Not and Anywhere But Here. The title track Metamorphosis came back on Small Rooms, Big Nerves after 2005, and on night two at Madison Square Garden The Math returned for the first time since 2006.

Hilary Duff

Released September 28, 2004, on her seventeenth birthday. Japan had it two weeks earlier. More guitar and more black, with the pink intact and studs on top.

That same year, A Cinderella Story opened in July and Raise Your Voice in October. She co-wrote Rock This World, Haters and Mr. James Dean, the last two with Haylie.

Jericho

It's on this album, plays in Raise Your Voice and came back as a 2005 remix on the Collector's Signature Edition of Most Wanted.

Haters

She wrote it with Haylie. The tabloids put a name on it, and Hilary always denied it.

The one that got away

Since U Been Gone came to her team first. They passed because the notes sat too high for her voice, and it became Kelly Clarkson's huge hit.

The Last Song

The closing track was recorded in her dressing room. The whole album was made between film shoots, on weekends and tour nights.

I Am

Written by Diane Warren, the songwriter behind Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing and Toni Braxton's Un-Break My Heart. It came back as a hidden track at the end of the Most Wanted Collector's.

The edition to own

The Japanese edition, with three bonus tracks. An acoustic version of Who's That Girl? and two covers, Our Lips Are Sealed by The Go-Go's and My Generation by The Who.

On the 2026 tour

Fly, with a longer intro. Someone's Watching Over Me came back on Small Rooms, Big Nerves, from London to Las Vegas, for the first time since 2008.

Hilary Duff in a gold jacket, Dignity era

2007 · Hollywood Records

Dignity

The dance-floor album. Electropop influenced by The Faint, Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé, written almost entirely with Kara DioGuardi between her breakup with Joel Madden and her parents' separation.

It arrived with brunette hair, black leather and diamonds on an Andrew Macpherson cover, plus an Elizabeth Arden fragrance named after her biggest single.

With Love

A Matthew Rolston video with Kellan Lutz, a chase through a hotel and look changes that nod to Vertigo and La Femme Nikita. It also doubled as the ad for the With Love… Hilary Duff fragrance.

On the 2026 tour

With Love is in almost every show. In London she brought three fans up to dance it, and at Madison Square Garden she slipped in bits of Danger and Gypsy Woman.

Stranger

A Fatima Robinson video with henna and Middle Eastern-inspired wardrobe. Hilary has said the song is about her parents' relationship. #1 on Dance Club Songs.

Play with Fire

The first taste of the era. Released August 21, 2006, seven months before the album.

Gypsy Woman and Dreamer

She wrote Gypsy Woman with Haylie and Ryan Tedder. Dreamer pokes fun at the stalker who followed her in 2006.

In Mexico

The Dignity Tour played Arena Monterrey on January 12, 2008, Auditorio Siglo XXI in Puebla on the 14th, Auditorio Telmex on the 16th and the Palacio de los Deportes on the 18th. That night she covered Pat Benatar's Love Is a Battlefield and, in the encore, Reach Out, months before its release.

Same era

War, Inc. came out in 2008, with Hilary as Yonica Babyyeah, the pop star of a made-up country. She said Yonica was everything she wasn't, which is exactly why she had so much fun with it.

Best of Hilary Duff

The compilation that closed out her Hollywood Records contract. Two new songs, three remixes on the standard edition, extra versions in Europe and Japan, and a Leslie Kee cover that Japan had already used for Dignity.

Reach Out

Hilary was saving it for her next album and the label put it here instead. Video by Philip Andelman, premiered on MySpace on October 28, 2008. She had already sung it at the Palacio de los Deportes that January, months before release. And there's an extra voice almost nobody notices, rapper R. Prophet, uncredited.

Holiday

The other new track, written by the sisters with Tedder. No single, no video, but it did get its own remix on the same album, the Bermudez-Chico mix by Joe Bermudez and Chico Bennett.

This Heart

Between 2013 and 2015 Hilary recorded far more than would fit on Breathe In. Breathe Out. Several of those songs are registered under her name, and some leaked in 2019. They remain unreleased to this day.

It All Starts Tonight opens the list, and it's the one that feels most written for whoever's listening. Hilary asks straight questions, when was the last time you were just you, with no pressure to be someone else, when was the last time you felt the love. In the second pre-chorus she tells whoever's been around for a while that they're one of hers now. We read it exactly that way, as Hilary talking to her fans, and the chorus is the toast to what's next.

None of them are on streaming. The tracklist is the one fans pass around. Credits come from ASCAP and SOCAN registrations, and Toby Gad is on five of the nine.

Eight years after Dignity, and the same year Younger premiered. She recorded it between 2013 and 2015, scrapped the EDM sessions and cut part of the album in Sweden with Bloodshy and Tove Lo.

Tattoo was written by Ed Sheeran, Jake Gosling and Chris Leonard. Matthew Koma co-wrote and produced several songs, and in 2019 the two got married.

The heart

The red heart between IN. and BREATHE. is the album's signature. Hilary has one tattooed on her wrist since March 2013, tiny and red, done at Shamrock Tattoo in West Hollywood the same afternoon as Haylie and their friends. She shared it on Twitter with "All is full of love…", the phrase that titles a Björk song.

Sparks

Hannah Lux Davis shot it documentary-style, with Hilary on Tinder dates. Fans asked for a version without the app and got it two weeks later. She debuted it on TV on Ellen the same day the video dropped.

Before the album

Chasing the Sun and All About You came out in 2014 and didn't make the standard edition. The Japanese edition has them both, plus Outlaw, which was featured in Younger.

Tove Lo

She co-wrote Sparks and One in a Million, two of the poppiest songs on the album.

The edition to own

The Target deluxe, with Belong and Rebel Hearts. Hilary co-wrote Brave Heart, Lies, Picture This, Night Like This and Rebel Hearts.

On the 2026 tour

Sparks and Breathe In. Breathe Out. on the tour, plus My Kind on Small Rooms, Big Nerves. With no tour in 2015, they waited eleven years to be played at a show of her own.

Small Rooms, Big Nerves

Her first headline shows since 2008. It kicked off January 19, 2026, at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, with seven songs played live for the first time.

The team behind it

Hilary and Matthew Koma wrote all eleven. Brian Phillips co-wrote ten and produced the whole album with Koma.

Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire

Disney Channel · 2001 — 2004

Lizzie McGuire

Created by Terri Minsky, it premiered January 12, 2001, and turned twenty-five in 2026. Two seasons, 65 episodes and an animated Lizzie who said out loud everything the real one kept to herself.

Sing to me, Paolo.

Animated Lizzie

Before Lizzie

At eleven she was written out of a show because they replaced her with twins, who could work longer hours. She was about to give up on Hollywood when the Disney audition came along. Casting director Robin Lippin asked her to come back prepared, and the next day she walked in with everything memorized.

She told the story to Variety in November 2025.

The movie

The Lizzie McGuire Movie opened May 2, 2003, and grossed $55.5 million. Rome, Isabella, Paolo and a stage.

The slow version of What Dreams Are Made Of in the movie is a demo. It's sung by producer Mark Hammond as Paolo and Amy Owsley, a local singer, as Isabella. They kept it as is, and the soundtrack went double platinum.

Made by fans, in Mexico

We're the serenade.

In 2023, Hilary was on vacation in Mexico City when fans found out where she was staying. At three in the morning they were outside, under her balcony, singing her songs to her.

She told the story in March 2026 on Se Regalan Dudas, a Mexican podcast. Right around then she was thinking about coming back to music, and that serenade told her people were still waiting. In 2026, luck… or something came out.

HDM is Hilary Duff's official fan club in Mexico, backed by Warner Music México. We tell you what's happening with her, keep her full archive, from Santa Claus Lane to luck… or something, and put together fan projects and listening parties for every time she comes. In February, the serenade moves inside the Palacio.
